Building a better internet where privacy is the default.

Proton was founded in 2014 by a group of scientists who met at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Concerned by the mass surveillance of the internet, they built end-to-end encrypted email — Proton Mail — as an easy-to-use privacy tool available to everyone.

We believe privacy is a fundamental human right. Our mission is to build an internet where privacy is the default, powered by community-driven open-source technology.

Our team

Proton is now a team of over 500 engineers, developers, scientists and privacy advocates based around the world, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
